Back again

Yes, i have been back for some time! the voyage from Isafjörður to Reykjavik went well, but walking around in Reykjavik made me walk like a drunk man, due to the long time spent at sea;0)

Early next day after arriving in Reykjavik, Anna and I flew to Copenhagen where my parents picked us up. we were all going to celebrate the 60 year anniversary of the Sirius patrol, on a hotel in Jutland. almost 120 Sirius people showed up with their wifes and girlfriends, some coming from Greenland, some from Jerusalem, Norway, Iceland and elsewhere...

it was great fun to meet old and new friends and spend the day and evening together telling old stories about dogs, snow and similar experiences during more than 26 months in NE-Greenland.

on monday we flew back to Iceland, as Anna needs to work to provide for me and i have some more work to do on my thesis...

i have been asked to come to Antartica as a guide and lecturer on board the Fram ( same ship as this trip), and after some short thinking i accepted. it is not every day you get a chance like this, to work with some nice people, see penguins and see the other icy world...

The first trip will be like this...

therefore i will travel to Buenos Aires in the end of this month and come back in the end of December. i look very much forward to these voyages, unless crossing the Drake passage, as i get quite easy sea-sick...but eating some pills and keeping my food inside my stomach is one of my goals!

Isafjörður

This morning we arrived in Isafjörður in the west fjords of Iceland. a thin layer of snow was covering the mountains, but soon the sun looked out from behind the clouds and we could enjoy the scenery of the town. some of our guests went on different trips, short hikes, boat trip or a bus-tour. i went walk about in the town, looked at a great museum. Some of our guests tried the Hákarl= rotten shark and the almost deadly brennivin aka Svarta dauðir = black death. Afterwards i tried to find the local swimming-pool, which ended up with me not going there. instead i went to the local bakery got a cup of tea and a delicious pink cake.

for lunch the expedition team met in an old house and got a delicious fish soup and many different dishes of fried fish, served on the frying pans.

now we are cruising towards Reykjavik along the beautiful fjords.

Blomsterbugten-DNB-Myggbukta and Ella Ö

the internet has been down a bit and we have been quite busy.

During the night we sailed from Alpefjord to Blomsterbugten in Keizer Franz Josephs fjord, only to wake up to another beautifull morning in the national park. we landed close to the old hut and after posting the "prison" guards in the terrain the guests could come ashore. it was bitterly cold to stand in the shadow, but after the sun came along and some hot cacao i was back in business. after teaching my colleagues why the matches should be sticking out of the match box etc. we went onboard the ship again and cruised out the fjord in great weather and and with a magnificent scenery, towards Daneborg, headquater of Sirius.

the next morning Ejnar Mikkelsen a war ship from the Danish navy was at anchor and later that day Vædderen a larger naval vessel joined us. it is deffinately not every day there are three ships at anchor at Daneborg!

four people at the station were friendly enough to wake up from a small hangover due to "slædedaab" and guide our groups around on the station. our guests found it very interesting, especially due to my lecture about Sirius yesterday.

we invited Sirius onboard for lunch, we looks completely crazy and surealistic out, but glad we could give something back to the boys.

we cruised down along Clavering Ö to watch Dödemandsbugten and Eskimonæs on our way down to Myggbukta.

Next morning snow had moved further down the mountains and the weather was clam and the sun was a little far away. on our way to the landing site a polar bear showed its face, creating some problems and organizing. everything went well and we had our perimeters put out to protect our guests. Ejenar Mikkelsen was also in Myggbukta and visited the station.

Steffen and I went up to the bear to see what it was doing and to scare it away. at 100-150 m it look at us for some time and decided to go away. i had only brought my 40 mm lens and was soooo mad! arggg dumme bjarki!

then we sailed towards Ella Ö via Sofia Sund, while enjoying the jacuzzi and the scenery.

today weather was still great, as always in "my" Greenland, minus 1 and some wind but later on sun and still weather. a polar bear had trashed large parts of the station so Palle (63) and Kasper repaired most of it while we were standing guard.

after looking at icebergs close to Ruth Ö, some of which where 45 m high we sailed through beautifull Narhval Sund only to meet Ejnar Mikkelsen again close to Kongeborgen.

the day ended by Kasper, Kathrine and me in the jacuzzi ocerlooking Mestersvig and leaving the National park, heading for Isafjördur...

Mestersvig and Alpefjord

Yesterday in a little bit of snow and low clouds we landed on the beaches of Nyhavn in Mestersvig. during our four hour stay, the cloud cover lifted and revealed Greenland in all its beauty, with sun and a sugar cover of new fallen snow on the mountains. last year i was skiing in this area only 10 days from now!
we only stayed in Nyhavn due to the short landing time and the helath of the passengers. Thomas and Torben from FVM came down together with the dog Lola and had a small souvenir shop, visited the boat and had breakfast and did expedition control of the ship.
After we left Mestersvig we sailed into Alpefjord where we got absolutely magnificent weather, no clouds and lots of sun. cool weather and almost no wind.
close to Spærregletcher we did almost two hours of polar circle boat cruis in behind Spærregletcher in fantastic weather and conditions. jagged peaks of almost 3000 meters and sugar cover in snow and just amazing.
the day ended by me to sit in a jacuzzi on the top deck looking at the stars...

Reached Scoresbysund

at hrs 1500 we reached Scoresbysund, only 4 hrs delayed. the sea got a bit calmer during last night and people was waking up from the half-dead...

we had a nice day in scoresbysund in sunny weather. I met Martin and Karina from nuna travel, petted some little puppies and went to kaffemik at Martins house.

i held two lectures about Mestersvig before entering Scoresbysund and i just held another after dinner for the Scandinavian speaking about Mestersvig. the sea is getting a bit bumpy again, but luckily not 10 meter waves and it is only 245 km to Mestersvig. in Mestersvig we will only be in Nyhavn and walk a little bit around.

After getting the sea-sickness away the chance of getting fatter is present. the food is really good and there is enough of temptations with a huge calorie content;0)

Far from that I am very happy to be back in my back-yard, so to speak. today i visited my first town outside the National park, that only took me almost 8 years!

I hope we get nice weather and good conditions so we can show our guests what a beautiful place we are going to.

sea-sick in the Denmark strait...

All night it has been bad weather and we havent really come into the Denamrk Strait. wind has been between 20 and 25m/sek with 10 m high waves. i am a bit sea-sick, though close to throwing up i mangaed to keep it in me.

the ship is very nice, except the lecture rooms are in the bow of the boat. i was supposed to hold 3 today but it ended up with a small-talk in the lounge instead. after 35 min i had to run on deck and get some air!

we are delayed due to the weather so will maybe reach Scoresbysund tomorrow evening instead of hrs 1100. i cant wait to get stable ground under neath my legs again.

the sea and wind is calming down a bit, just not fast enough.
last time i checked my gps we were only 60 km NW of Hornbjarg, the westfjords of Iceland.

Back to NE-Greenland again, again...

Tomorrow I will go to NE-Greenland again, again... this time with "Fram" from Hurtigruten.

there will be around 220 passengers on board, mostly from Germany and we will be 8 guides and lectures. Palle Norit, a former Sirius member from my fathers time in the 60´s is also on board. The plan is to sail from Reykjavik to Scoresbysund-Mestersvig-Alpefjord-Blomsterbugten-Daneborg-Myggbukta-Ella Ö-Isafjörður and Reykjavik.

This will be a trip right into my own backyard so to speak;0). finally i will be able to go to a Greenlandic town, Scoresbysund. this is a bit strange since i have spent almost 8 years inside the National park...

I will try to update my blog during the trip, if not something will come after the trip.

I will be back in Reykjavik on the 23rd and the 24th Anna and I will fly to Denmark to attend to a big party to celebrate that SIRIUS is 60 years old... then back to Reykjavik on the 26th, and see what my supervisors have to say about my thesis!

The ship has a web-camera and a blog that will be updated every day, so you can see what we are all up to...

HANDED in my master THESIS

tonight I handed in my master thesis, again. hopefully it will be good enough this time. now it is 106 pages and almost 27 000 words, which is a lot. I have been way too busy, i think;0)

my supervisors will go over it while i leave the country and go to Greenland...

Back from Greenland

we had a great trip and spent 2 days in Akureyri, North Iceland due to delays of the ship we were using. So we studied the local town for one day and the swimming-pool and the next day we rented two cars and drove to Myvatn, Dettifoss, Godafoss, Asbyrgi, Husavik and back again. we had a swim in Grjotagja at Myvatn, which is a very warm (for some people not used to warm water) cave with influx of water from a crack in the earth!

Then we flew in two planes to Constable Pynt in Greenland and all cramped together in one twin otter plane and flew up to Mestersvig, overflying Malmbjerget on the way, which was covered in clouds.

the ship we used as base had anchored up in Mesters Vig and not in Nyhavn, so we had to wait for some hours before it had gotten to the right place, so that we could hoist the helicopter on deck and attach the rotor-blades. in the evening we flew up to Malmbjerget to have a look at all the sites and walk around in the camp...

i will write more later

i must do some more work on my thesis which is due on september 12th...

i came back from Greenland yesterday after 9 days of great weather and good work and many good adventures with good friends.

i lost part of my luggage with my hard drive, pas port and wallet... but hope to find it again.

now i am in school and will have to work hard and finish my thesis...

we are still in Akureyri
yesterday we walked around in akureyri in beautifull weather and looked at stores and had a lot of good food to eat.
to day the weather was a bit more cloudy, with occassional showers of rain and sun. we rented two cars and drove to myvatn, swam in a cave with very warm water, looked at the geothermal areas, dettifoss and godfoss, asbyrgi, saw whales from a distance near husavik and had a marvelous but slow dinner at strikid, situated on top of a building in akureyri with a great view over akureyri.
tomorrow morning w plan to fly to greenland and strat working and flying helicopters...

Mestersvig again...

it seems like i can never stop going back to my beloved Greenland...

two days ago i came back to Iceland, after spending three weeks in Norway, helping my parents laying floors in their house.

the days in Iceland have been spent catching up with some things on my master thesis, which i am about to be really sick off...

tomorrow i will fly to Akureyri in northern Iceland, where i will stay a night in a hotel and catch up with my fellow co-workers.

Thursday we will fly to Mestersvig, Greenland were we will stay and work for approx two weeks.

altogether we are 7 people, 3 former Sirius members, 1 from station Nord and the rest civilians. we are employed by Quadra mining to clean up and ship home a lot of equipment, fuel drums and garbage from the area around Mestersvig.

an Icelandic ship will be anchored in the bay and we will sleep in containers on the deck and fly helicopter to work every day;0)

it will be long days with many hours of work, so we hopefully will have some time for a small trip or two...

i am not sure if it will be possible to get online, so you just have to wait for my photographs and descriptions from my life...

and the last 2 years i have been in school...

This years Sirius winter school has arrived in Mestersvig. they are 7 men and 2-3 instructors. they will spend 4 weeks at Mestersvig, learning to ski and survive in the Arctic. the course will have both a swimming excercise and a 100 km ski run and off-course a really good time!

i wish it was me...
i am sitting in school in Iceland and trying to finish my master thesis in glacial geology by the 17th of May...

this is my ride back home, here we are at Keflavik ariport after 1 hr 20 min from Mestersvig. i have never flown that fast from Greenland to Iceland before!

everything went very well, anna picked me up at the airport, had some food at home and then we went to the swimming-pool and the hot pots;0)
the weather was excellent yeasterday, sunny and new snow in the mountains. today it's raining...

clearing the runway

Yeasterday we took out the snowblower and the snow-plow and started clearing the runway. it was first time for Raymund to do this so I spent some time teaching him how to do it right.
when we where almost finished with the apron the snowblower broke down, probably due to some electrical problems. luckily we got it back to the garage and it's possible to land a plane;0)

internet was down all day, due to solar solstice (storms) interference...

then i have to clean up my things and say good bye to Nyhavn and hopefully there will be a jet for me tomorrow, taking me back to Iceland...

a time to remember...

Today was the time to remember, remember our two colleagues Dan and Martin who went trhough the ice at Noret, this day 10 years ago.

Raymund and i put the flag at half mast and drove out to the two crosses that stand close to the place the accident occured. we brought two candles that we lit and held a minute of silence to remember and honour our colleagues and also those who serve with the armed forces around the world.

the dogs where with us, so the whole station was present in this memory.

then we drove out to Hamna and had a cup of hot chocolate and some crakcers. the weather has been absolutely magnificent, and the dogs are a bit tired after some 25 km of running...

tomorrow we have to start clearing the runway to be ready for tuesday, when i leave mestersvig, once again;0)

this picture was taken at 0815 this morning, it might look like the gate to hell or a massive magma flow from a volcano...

today i got a new phone call from Denmark, "new plans, bjarki" the air-force is sending a jet on tuesday to pick you up;0)

after changing a lot of light bulbs out-doors on the station and doing service on one of the generators, we took the scooters and drove up to Minebyen. large parts of the road has been flushed away since i was there last year...

i taught Raymund where to drive and how to not flip over or how to save it when it has already happened, twice;0)

well well, it seems that my departure will be delayed. today i got a phone call telling me that there isn't enough space on the plane so i have to wait for the next plane. the next plane will be on the 27th, if weather permits. i really hope so, because i have to be at a conference in southern iceland on the 29th...

this is the way the arctic works, there is nothing to do about the weather, space on planes and break downs. no need to cry because it doesn't help.
the positive thing is more pay for longer time and bigger chance of seeing the big white fellow again and visit nce places...

Picture of my fathers boat, Jytte in Nyhavn. As you can see the fjord ice has started to freeze. it is a mixture of pack-ice and new-ice. last night we got a few cm of snow and the day before a few mm of snow...
if the weather gets a bit better today, we will go on our scooters to minebyen:0)
the end of my stay is near, on wednesday i will leave this wonderfull place again. 7 weeks have passed on quickly as always... but it will also be good to see Anna again and being able to get fresh fruit, milk, youghurt etc...

wonderfull ski trips

For the last couple of days i have been out skiing. the weather has been wonderful, a little bit of wind, sunny, no clouds and temp. around -8 degrees. on my ski trip today i came across polar bear tracks, so good thing i am armed in this place. even though the tracks are old, the bear is probably around, as there is no fjord ice it can escape over.

Since yeasterday a great deal of more ice has moved into the fjord, so if this continues we will soon have an ice cover in the fjord! jippiiii

DLRH or Washburns Hus on the way to Minebyen. i said it before but this house has the best view in Mestersvig;0) Thanks to the Washburn family who got the house built in 1952 (i think).

finally we managed to get across the river, Tunnelelv. we drove snow scooters while our 3 dogs ran, wish i was in as good shape as them! First we went to the house and had some wamr chocholate, snickers and some crackers and enjoyed the view. then i got the idea that we should try and drive up on top of Hesteskoen (1118 m), even though there wasn't that much snow. we got to 851 m and then it got too steep, both due my problem with heigths, Raymunds first scootertrip and no more snow.

it was a fantastic day and we could see the whole fjord from kap simpson to Ymers Ø, and even getting paid for this:0)

the ice has started to form in the fjord, so i guess that in some weeks it will cover the whole fjord...

another great day

Most of the morning we spent trying to figure out why we don't get enough heating in the garage. this is done by the generators producing a lot of surplus heat, this is put through pipes which then goes to some fans in the generator house and then over to the garage. the problem is that we don't get the amount of warmt over to the garage, which is anoying as we know there is enough of surplus heat! we tried some different combinations of opening and closing some valves ( many options) and changing the pressure in a pressure tank. suddenly we got some more warm water over to the garage. it's a start but not enough. next face is to wait for some insulation for the pipes, this will probably give us at least 5-10 degrees of warmer water;0).

then we finished insulating the roof that we cut a whole in, the other day, put up a shelf and redecorated the room.
i needed to put some glue on the screws in my ski bindings as they where all coming out and then i went for a ski trip with the dogs. then the other ski binding started to come off, so i have some more mending to do tomorrow;0)

the my evening project is working on my poster so it can be presentable in a good way, so i can go to this conference when i come back to Iceland...

after lunsj i decided to take the dogs, and go skiing. it was cold and calm weather and the sun was warming me up. i walked down to Noret and then up on Langdyssen and the a bit around. the dogs were running around, chasing the local wild-life while i was enjoying the fresh air and the excersise...

This evening a made a 3D model of my little glacier and finished my first draft for a poster i have to show at a conference in Høfn, Iceland in the end of October.

this is a map i made of my little glacier today. it's made in GIS and it's an aerial photo where i have drawn in moraines and the different size of the glacier through time.

this was made after we had been out working and freezing of fingers and toes. we decided to get some more space in the garage, so in the middle of the winter, -10 and 15 knots of wind, we opened up the roof, cut the chimney in three pieces and then we had to mend the hole and finished off with putting new tare sheets on the roof. a nice big and warm cup of tea was needed afterwards. but nice to have done a good days work and gotten some more space...

scooter trip

Yeasterday Raymund and i drove our scooters to the hills around Nyhavn. we brought a shot-gun and walked a bit around to look for some food, but we didn't find anything... good thing the freezer is full!
there is still a need for some more snow, but it was ok to get around in the terrain. Tunnelelv is still full of water, more than 50 cm of water flowing, so we can't get over to Minebyen and Washburns hus!

Polar Bear

This morning when we were having breakfast a polar bear came walking in to our station. i grabbed my camera and started taking pictures and video.

our dogs didn't notice anything, even when i started shooting flares out of the window... thanks dogs!
the first picture is taken at Noret, a bit of new ice has started to form, but it's not strong enough so we didn't go out there. the bear broke through the ice several times. this was when we scared it away.

After eating 3 hot dogs for dinner i decided to jump on my scooter and drive out on a small hill, Langdyssen to take some pictures of the station. it was almost fullmoon, .6 and some wind. the place i choose to drive up had a lack of snow and in the middle of everything i ended up in a gun-figth with a muskox;0). well it was only flares due to it's close presence to me. luckily it ran away and i could take my pictures. now i'm just getting warm again after some fresh air watching the scenery...

today we had to refuel some of the buildings. this was done by laying out a 100m fuelhose out to the buildings. then we turned on the fuelpump and waited, until it started coming smoke out of the pump. the fuel pump broke down so we had to abort the whole operation...
in some weeks we will have to use the old way, the fuel-waggon, which is also faster;0)

then we had to do alot of administrative work, sending orders for the christmas drop to the office, fuel statistics for the last month and phone records for the month. it will be exciting to see how much i have been calling for...

it's another great day, - 4, sun and almost wind. now i'm stuck indoors with my school work...
tomorrow i need to go skiing!!!!

After having some days without internet, due to all kind of technicl problems with the equipment, we finally managed to repare it today:0)

for some days now we have had a lot of wind and another 10 cm of snow. this is looking good...

inbetween some bad weather there was a oppen window of good weather, so i managed to go out skiing. it's still some rocks under the snow, but it's getting much better. the picture is from Saturday.

we still don't have any ice in the fjord, which gives us all this warm weather. we had temp. between -9 and +5. today we are at +1!

this is the only animals my dog Lola and me saw yeasterday, the rest had disappeared, but i had a nice trip anyway. the weather was very good and there was a lot of snow. next time i have to bring skis...

today we painted a lot of floors on the station. it was a sticky business, as the paint was a two component. it's like super-glue. say no more!

we also put up covers for the bridges on the station, thereby hopefully being able to stop some of the snow, from drifting under the bridges and making a cathastrophe in the spring.

today it's snowing again, we probably got another 10 cm, so we had to clear some of the roads of snow with the snow plow. a bit early...

i fixed a broken door in the cafeteria and raymund finished the 3 fllors we have been working on this week. all that is left i painting them with an epoxy paint...

yeasterday we had some snow in the mountains, but when i woke up this morning it was snowing and more came along during the day. the temperature is only around zero, so it's not very cold. we more or less finished the big things outdoors, so now we spend our time with redecorating the workshop, painting floors and putting cement on the floors.

then i spend some time working on my thesis...

after some social time with the people from the sailboat, they left today for Scoresbysund.
a cruise-ship with some russians left the fjord yeasterday and an other ship left the fjord today. it must be crawling with tourists in the fjords...

today we have painted the first layer in Syndicatet ( the timber work-shop), so now it's time for some relaxation and some school work...

an other great day in Mestersvig.
which hopefully will be open forever!

a new week...

the first week here has been quite good, working a lot, trying to finish all outdoor activities before winter sets. temperature has dropped from around + 5 to zero. most of the time we have had calm weather and sun, but the last 2 days have been foggy.
we have moved a fuel tank behind the cantina and to the front, putting up new fuel pipes, cleaning up in different houses and garages, walking with our 3 dogs, basically getting the station ready for winter.

to day a dutch ship hailed us on the VHF and asked us if we wanted to come onboard. we got coffee and lunch and now they are coming here on the station for a social visit...
the boat is a one masted steel boat of 67 feet. onboard are one british, two norwegian and the rest are dutch. one of the norwegians even know who my father is. what a small world this is.

i was just on the radio with a russian cruise boat trying to "escape" our sharp ears and eyes, on his way out of the fjord..

leaving iceland

this is my plane in akureyri in northern iceland early yeasterday morning. i left reykjavik the same morning saying goodbye to my cute girlfriend, anna for seven weeks.
the trip with the twin otter took 2 hr 15 min to constable point in greenland and then an other 40 min to mestersvig where i will be staying until october 21st.

after arriving in mestersvig we got a visiting danish warship. we had to load the ship with more than 1 ton of flour and spare parts, all of it going to daneborg, head quarter of sirius.
after dinner onboard the ship we showed the crew the station and then we drove them back to the harbour.

today we had 9 visitors from daneborg in a twin otter, it was people from the office and the greenland command on their way back home. after showing them the station a c-130 from the danish airforce picked them up. the brought a new jeep as the old one was completely defect and brought the wreck back home.

after another twin otter that had to be loaded with 250 kg of goods we could finally relax and have some lunch...

the weather has been very good, sun, snow on the mountain tops and +5 degrees!

Yes, it's true I can't stay away from the east-coast of Greenland, i got the bugg...
On September the 1st. i will fly from Iceland to Mestersvig, Greenland and stay at the station for 5-6 weeks, until the middle of October. I will have plenty of time for reading and writing on my thesis and at the same time get to experience my old kingdom again...

I really look forward to a good time there!

After arriving in Denmark i drove down to my aunt to deliver my luggage so theat it could be transported back home to Norwway with the rest of my stuff...
it awas raining most of the time i was in denmark, but also quite hot. there fore we decided to go to a bar to get a drink, A COLD DRINK. we went to copenhagen icebar. it was below freezing point and quite funny.

on wednesday i flew back home to norway to relax and get my life back together, before i go to iceland on the 25th...

Leaving Greenland after 3,5 years in Sirius and on Mestersvig...

On the 5th of August I left Greenland.
I spent 2,5 years in the Sirius dog sledge patrol where I drove 9000 km and spent 17 months of that in a tent or an old trappers cottage

I spent my last year in Mestersvig, where I also lived from 1975-78 as a child in Nyhavn.

I have enjoyed my stay in Greenland and will always remember the adventures and the beautifull scenery which is undescribable... I'm sure that one day I will come back... to sail with my boat or work again... time will show.

to all of you who read my blog and commented, it was great to hear from you and knowing someone was interested in my doings!

today i'm in copenhagen, Denmark where i will be for a few days, before heading back home to norway fore some vaccation.
on the 25th of August i will go to Iceland where I will spend the next 2 years taking a masters in Geology.

i will continue this blog, but this time from a new country...

My boat Jytte was set in the water on the 3rd of August. i had tried earlier but due to the lack of water in the bay and busyness with the supply ship this was the last chance. with very good help from my tired friends we got the ship in the water. while waiting for high tide we had som cake and champagne in my od house in Nyhavn. around midnight the water wouldn't rise any more and we had to pull the boat off the waggon. while the guys where pulling the boat over to the new hauling place i drove the waggon over there. there where some problems to get it over there, but we succeeded. at hrs 0230 we had the boat on the waggon and had it pulled up on the shore. then we went bakc home fore a beer and some sleep.

the next morning we did some cleaning up after the supply ship so that things that couldn't stay out-doors where brought in-doors.
i went down to the boat and started lifting the waggon up on pieces of wood. then a plane from Daneborg arrived with the boss from the office in Denmark and others who were all flying home with me on the hercules on the 5th of august.
after spending some housr showing them around on the station and in Tunnelelv.
during the the night I put on the cover on the boat and moved around with 400 kg of ballast from the boat. at 0400 i went tired to bed.

my last day in Greenland i spent working on the boat. Hansi and Stefan helped me with the last cover on the boat and to take the wheels of the waggon. a couple of hours before the plane arrived i had finished all the work on the boat and was ready to go back home...NOT!!!

supply ship at last

Finally i have some more time to add some pictures and write a few words.

we have been quite busy due to the arrival of the only supply ship to Mestersvig. due to some technical problems and heavy ice it arrived more than one week late in Mestersvig.

on the 1st of August at hrs 1316 the ship arrived in Nyhavn. until hrs 1815 the ship used the time to find an anchor point and to get a stern rope on shore. this was a bit difficult due to the ice in the Nyhavn bay. we also got several hundreds of metres of fuel hoses out to the ship.

at hrs 1815 the ship started to pump fuel to our tank on land. at hrs 0030 we had gotten 130 000 litres of fuel and we could start to pull the hoses back on alnd again. this took some time and Mads got fuel sprayed allover him as he was disconecting one of the couplings on one of the hoses.. there is always some fuel left even though the ship is blowing air through them after fueling...

our work comensed at 0145 as we went back to the station fore some sleep.

up again at hrs 0830 and the ship started to off-load on the beach in Nyhavn at hrs 1000.

untill hrs 1700 we got all 20 containers on land and 3 new vehichles. we used some of the new vehichles to make a new beach head to unlad thecontaineres. this was reenforced all the time and kept driveable during the whole operation.

From hrs 1700 to hrs 2200 the ship and it's crew had a break, while we were unpacking the containers so that they could be ready for the ship to take back empty.

at hrs 22oo the ship loaded the empty containers andat hrs 0200 the last one and the trucks from the ship was onboard and Arina Arctica left us.

this year every thing went really good and we couldn't have done all the work that fast without the help from good friends from Nanok (Peter, Søren and Asger), the team from Ella Ø (Hansi, Jesper, Troels and Orm), Cookie (the cook), the engineer (morten) and off course Mads and myself.

we landed 130 000 litres of fuel

45 tons of new vehichles

45 tons of provisions, spare parts, oil etc...

problems to solve...

the picture is a couple of days old, when there wasn't any ice around...

after a night in Mestersvig the 2 ella Ø teams left us. they came here with a lot of garbage and provisions for the sirius depot. Mads and me tried to get Jytte in the water, we almost succeeded but there wasn't enough water... and soon i have to leave my paradise and return to civilization...

the supply ship finished at Daneborg and started sailing towards us last night.

we got up early and woke up to sun shine and the whole fjord packed with ice. last night there was nothing...ARGGG as it looks now it's not possible to get the fuel from the ship or the barge "Nuuni" from the ship to the shore with all our goods... time will show what happens. the ship isn't even here.

i'm getting a bit stressed up due to my upcoming travel back home, but i guess that day had to come sometime, it's not possible to stay in paradise for ever ;0)

Today the supply ship was scheduled here, but due to the ice conditions the ship passed us and headed for Daneborg, where it's due at 2100 hours. they will probably be at Mestersvig on the 2. of august.

today we had 3 landings of a twin otter plane and one by a helicopter. the helicopter came from the supply ship and picked up 3 of the guys staying here and flew them to Daneborg.

on Malmbjerget they had several visits of a young polar bear. it has been really anoying and the people up there have been quite fed up with it. the will borrow one of our dogs, which is quite a good safety for them. the dog will be picked up in the near future by a helicopter...

a norwegian kayak party landed here and we brought them out to Nyhavn where the will start their journey...

to night we have to british geologist and two icelandic pilots staying for dinner.

therefore the supply ship will be post poned to the 30th of July.

today i have been teaching mads and the cook how to do service on the generators and then we took our 15 dogs for a sledge trip. it was too warm for them so the trip wasn't that long, but they did manage everything very well.

the satelite picture is from sunday. in 3 days our supply ship is scheduled here, but i don't think it will make it through the ice. therefore it will probably go to Daneborg first.
this picture was taken from the washburn cabine (camp Tahoe). this is priceless!!!

last week we had visitors from home. my mother, father and my girlfriend Anna was here for a week. it was very nice to have them here. therefore i haven't updated my blog for a while, but now i will get down to business again...

Today our friends from CASP was picked up by an Twin Otter from Iceland and flown to Milne land, where they will be conducting geological surveys for the next 3 weeks.
Hansi made som new places for the nine new dogs arriving from Daneborg sometime this summer. I went to the water lake 3 times and got 9000 litres of water for the houses on the station. Then I preasurerized the water pipes so that water could flow into the pipes. Afterwards I continued working on the new place for the sledges.
during hte afternoon it started raining a bit, luckily it has stopped again. I need no more of this nonsense...

today the weather was sunny and marvelous again, after a long time with rain and fog.

we spent part of the day on the road, close to Nyhavn trying to fill the broken road. we where using the bulldozer but there was no gravel only fine sand and black mud. the road now consists of a wet pile of this mess. but in a day or two it will dry out and we will be able to work it into a normal road...

the rest of the day was spent by paper work on the containers with goods that we are sending home with the supply ship and Hansi went on a sledge trip wit one of the guys from CASP (Cambridge Arctic Shelf Programme)

damage control

just when we thougt the good times were about to start all h... broka loose. last night the dam broke open due to heavy rain for the last many days. out of 10 days we had 8 with rain...
i started up the old bulldozer and headed up for the dam. the next 3-4 hours i spent making a new channel for the river and repairing and strengthening the dams. this time with huge amounts of rock and sand. then i drove the bulldozer back to the station to refuel. as i was fueling the fuel pump broke so i had quite a leak to work on... the damage on the bridge in Nyhavn and on the road was severe. i guess murphy was around!

today the weather changed, the sun was shining for some time on us and the mosquitos came by...
we repaired the bridge and the road, but missed a big hole nearer to nyhavn, which we will do tomorrow. the rest of the day we spent by packing old paint into containers. this is all going home with the supply ship.

i invited our 3 neighbours from CASP on dinner, it's always nice to meat other people and be nice to them.

on the first of july a C-130 from the danish air force came by on a training mission.

after loading the plane with 3 pallets, mostly of empty crates and my personal goods the captain turned off the engines. we had a chit chat and a cup of tea and showed them the station.

it was quite cozy to have some visitors again...

the rest of the day we spent packing old scrap metal in containers. this is all going back to denmark with the supply ship in the end of july...

for the last 7 days it has been raining almost every day and it´s quite anoying, cause i kind of hate the wet element...

yeasterday and today we were working on the road and the river. one was in the bulldozer and the other one in the hydrema. during the last 4 days we have been changing vehicle every day.
yeasterday it was nice and sunny. we got most of the road fillings done, but got a minor problem.
the bulldozer ran out of fuel, and the tank is 507 litres! UMG. so we had to go to the station and get 2 barrels of fuel and some new batteries. then we had to figure out how to air the engine so that it would start. as if not one problem was enough the starter wasn't eager to start. after a few hours we solved the problem and got the CAT up and running.

today it was raining. we strengthened the dam and moved some more gravel up along the road and collected trash and old barrels in the delta. it had been flushed out in the open by the flooding river.
today we finished the reconstruction of the road. what we need to do in the near future is to rake the road and pack it, then we might have to use the grader on it so smoothen out the surface...

it was still raining this morning.

we started out after breakfast by giving the dogs a Rabisin shot against rabies and some pills against worms.

then we headed out to the river and the bulldozer. after pre-heating with a flame tourch I started moving sand, gravel and rocks into the hole in the road. hansi was in the hydrema putting the drainage pipes in the ground. at hrs 1700 we finished for the day. i was a bit wet after sitting in the dozer for a whole day. we got most of the job done. so now the road is connected to Nyhavn, though it lacks a bit of "cosmetics"...

today was the day it started raining heavily...

we were allowed to start one of the bulldozer to stop the river from destrouying even more of our road. it was such a relief when the huge engine roared. it's crazy to think that the bulldozer is from 1952 and still going strong...

i drove the dozer into the riverbed and showed Hansi how to use it then he went crazy in the river and carved out a huge ditch where the water could flow and dugg up some big walls to prevent the water from overflowing. this meant that there isn't that much water in the river anymore, thus making our life a lot easier...

after blocking the water we went down to the section of the road that was missing. i got stuck in the sand twice with the hydrema. then i just settled for smoothening the bottom of the road, so that we can lay down the drainage pipes tomorrow. Hansi dug out a huge section of ice and snow, so that the water can run alongside the road instead of cutting it into peaces...

tomorrow we will have to fill up the holes, but it will take some days...

the narrower the dam getts the faster the water flows and erodes more...this is why it's so difficult to tame nature...
the first tourists arrived this season, but the left for the other side of the fjord after an hour...
finally we closed it, but it didn't last...buhu
this is the minor damage of the road! it looks like this 4-5 places. the worst places 30-40 metres of the road has been completelly removed.
yeasterday i made it to Nyhavn, crossing 3 missing parts of the road and only got stuck twice...

then we tried to stop the river from destrouying even more of our road. this went on fine and we directed the river out towards Kongeborgen. we were very happy. 3 hours later the river had cut through our dams and a long days work was flushed out to sea. the hydremas aren't big enough for that type of work.

i saw my first Hummle /Bee, and two of them...

today the weather has been quite warm and sunny.
the first mosquito bit be today, i had hoped to avoid them this year, but i guess with all the snow, eveything is like a swamp which is ideal for the little buggers...grrr

tomorrow we will try to start one of the bulldozers and see if we can repaire the dams and the road...

Today we had the warmest day of the year, +15,1 degrees. well it was probably in the sun...anyway it's nice and warm.

this also meant that more snow was melting, thus increasing the amount of water in the river, thus more erosion of the road...arggg

we finished packing the runway and the apron, cleared the road from snow to Dumpen and washed one of the hydremas and did some service on it.

then we went for a spin with the wheeled sledge with the dogs.

this morning I started raking the runway and the roads. i was dragging a big iron net after the hydrema, thus to loosen up the gravel and to even out the bumps from this winter.
this created a lot of dust, which came in everywhere. after a few hours i felt like i had eaten severeal litres of sand and i had to use preassure air got clean my self up.

then it was time to use the packer, it's also dragged by the hydrema. it has it's own engine and vibrates the ground with a preassure of 5 tons. the speed limit is 5 km an hour, so it will be some more days untill everything has been packed...

we also broght the second pipe for the road out to the smashed road.

today the water in the river, tried to destroy more of our road. thus we had to bring our 2 Hydrema into the river and try to put up a wall in the water. it wasn´t that easy as a bulldozer would have done the job much better. the wall we put up will protect a small part of the road for now, but we just moved the problem further downstream... arg!!!

after lunch Hansi welded some more fuel drums together, so we can use it for the water to run in under the road.

I dragged a net after the Hydrema to even out the road. then I used a 5 ton packer to flatten out the road.

yeasterday we went to the water lake to get water for the tower. almost 80 cm of the floor is covered by water...but there is nothing we can do about it!

Stuck in the river with Pisten Bully

Today was a busy day, digging all day long.

we had to remove a lot of slush ice which was blocking the bridge.

then i decided to take pisten bully for a spin on the river. i was removing snow from the other bridge, the one with out water! i thought!

suddenly the nose of pisten got stuck in a mixture of slush and water. i had to get Hansi to help me with the hydrema. we gathered a lot of straps and parked the hydrema on land app. 100 metres from pisten. Hansi tried to pull while i was trying to back up. the only thing that happende was that the straps broke, twice. so now we had to get creative if we wanted the thing out of the river before the water came any closer.

we found some 4x4 wood and a woodden plate and put it behind the pisten. then we backed the belts thereby pulling the wood underneath the pisten. hansi then pulled with the hydrema as i backed up, suddenly we got it moving and got out of the river. we cheared alot and went for lunch.

after lunch we dugg some more untill, 1600 when we went for a run with the dogs...

river flooding nr.2 and some more

this picture was taken close to nyhavn. the water has flooded the road and cut parts of it away. then we know what to do when all the snow has melted away.
yeasterday i welded some fuel drums together. the will act as the new tunnel for the water under the broken road, hopefully there will not be any problems with that next year...
for some time now, i have been building a mini-sledge. it's 1 metre long and buil in the scale 1:4. this will be nice to have on my fire place when i get old (er) ;0)

two days ago i dug out parts of the road to Nyhavn. when i started water started to seeve into the channel and thus rising, until i got to a place where the water could run out. it was quite deep for a time, but luckily it didn't drown my machine. i tried to do that later myself as i drove it into the river by accident, but i got it out.

today the river flooded down towards the station and reached the first bridge just after breakfast. hansi and i watched for some time and then we had to dig a channel with showels so that the water wouldn't reach the road. this was not enough so we had to dig another one. this looked like it would take the preasure of the bridge.

on our scootertrip later on, we found out that a major flooding had occured behind the station. this had loosened sometime during the night and had poured huge amounts of water into Noret and splashing snow and ice high up on the river banks and clearing the snow covered surface all the way down to the gravel and sand. the river had broken through the dam at Tunnelelv. thus directing around 50% of the water into Noret instead of nothing! but no worries it looks like we will have no problems with that...

I don't think this is winter pictures. this tells me that I'm looking at the end of the winter and the soon to bee summer. this is very nice! i think I will be able to ski for some more weeks.

this the second part of the disasterous spring flood of the river.just 30 sek earlier I was standing where the brown water is, with my snow scooter. i got a bad feeling and drove up on the hill and then this huge wall of water, snow and ice came tumbling down the canyon like a tsunami. i could never have escaped this...

i put some more pictures of my tsunami on the picture page. i will try to put some video on u-tube one of the days.

this was pretty crazy and exiting!

global warming and more

on the 29th our neighbours, Hans, Per and Phillipe left us. the were going back to mainstream life in the city... it has been a good time with a lot of fun together with them.

the 29th was also the day when the runway started to melt. the twin otter landed with a splash in the 5-10 cm of snow and slush, but no problems. since then we have seen differences on the snow covere every day. today the runway is 95% clear of snow, but there is still more than 1 meter of snow in the terrain.

the river has started to move slowly, so it is just a matter of time before we see it down at the station. i guess that in 2-3 weeks most of the snow will be gone!

on the 30th of may i had my 34th birthday. it was also my 4th birthday in greenland. next year will be in an other country!

hansi made us some good food and a delicious desert.

on the 31th of may hansi had his 31th birthday and it was my turn to be the chef:0)

the dogs has gotten so much seal meat and fat that they are completely soaked in it and very very dirty. i dare not show them if someone would come by. hehe

have a nice and warm summer. we had +9,2 degrees today.

we finished the new floor in the hall way. then we took down everything in the room and painted it.

after some more snow we had to clear all the roads and the runway again. while doing so, the temperature rose to +9.2 degrees, which was the warmest so far this year. from the 20th the weather has been warm and spring has definately come to us. the snow has started to collapse and getting rotten. every day we see changes in the amount of snow. i think we want have any snow here in 3 weeks! the skiing and sledging conditions are now really bad, especially when you use wooden skis like me ;0)

yeasterday we invited our neighbours on "Pinnekjøtt" a traditional norwegian christmas dis. it´s smoked and salted lamb meat which I steamed in a pot. I love it!!!

today a plane was supposed to come here and pick up our neighbours, but the weather gods wanted it different and covered the coast in fog and low clouds. we will have to see what tomorrow brings...

on the 17th of May we were invited to Nyhavn to celebrate 17.Mai with our Norwegian neighbours. it's the national day of Norway.

the weather was rather bad, almost like in Norway. snow, clouds and low visibility. it didn't matter that much, as we were indoors most of the time. the got some very delicious food, with starter main course and desert. some wine and drinks to complete everything.

at 3.30 we went back home and i got a long and needed rest...

on the 18th we didn't do anything except watching movies and relaxing. in the evening while i was making dinner a jet plane from the danish airforce called us on the radio and he made 2 low-pass over the station. ut had been doing fishery inspection in our area. the ice free area. hehe

for the last couple of days it has been snowing a bit so we had to clear the roads and the runway today. there is still a bit more left on the runway.

our neighbours came visiting us and helping us to lay the tail floor in the hall.

hansi took Per on a dog sledge trip. it was around 15 km and Per looked a bit tired afterwards...
